Concept
My selected books were collectively about cells and nano-biology. I initially approached the brief with the idea that cells fit together like hexagons in a honeycomb to make a bigger organism. However, a geometric connection alone wasn't enough of a "series", so I scrapped that and looked at it from a functional standpoint: cells are components that work together to make a bigger organism function.
With that in mind, I related them to gears in a machine. Each book would then have a specific depiction of gears. MiRNA is parts of the cell "gear", so that would be broken into fragments. The cells themselves are the gear, and those gears contribute to the evolutionary clock.
My self-imposed challenge of making the covers fit together would further solidify the theme of gears fitting and working together. I marked out key points where the illustrations would connect, and then oriented the rest of the design around those points while still making them each into their unique covers.
